여러 가지 학교를 조사할 때 유의할 점은 다른 사람의 말을 믿는 것보다 직접 찾는 것이 가장 확실하고 정확한 방법이라는 것이다. 학교는 크게 Liberal Arts, International School, California College로 분류된다. 우리 학교 학생들은 Liberal Arts 많이 가기 때문에 이를 중점으로 이야기하자면, Liberal Arts 중에 학교를 택할 때는 자신의 우선순위를 참고해서, 과 랭킹 1-100위나 전체 학교 랭킹 1-100위를 다 적은 다음 조사해야 한다. 이때 과와 그 과의 환경이 매우 중요하다. 대학교가 랭킹이 높은 경우라도 학교에서 주로 지원해주는 과가 자신의 과와 맞지 않을 경우는 많은 지원이나 혜택을 받을 수 없을 수도 있다. 해당 과에 많은 지원을 주는지, 아닌지는 그 과에 졸업생 수를 보면 알 수 있다. Liberal Arts 같은 경우에는 졸업생이 50명 이상이면 매우 유명한 과이며 지원도 많이 들어간다는 것을 알 수 있고, 30명 정도이면 잘 갖춰져 있다고 생각하면 된다. 20명 이하인 경우는 그 학교에서 지원이 많이 들어가지 않는 과라는 것을 알 수 있고, 단순히 형식적으로 갖춰져 있을 확률이 높다. 또한 과에 사람들이 많을수록 많은 지원이 들어가고, 여러 가지 활동과 혜택을 볼 수 있기도 하다. 그 과에 교수님이 몇 분인지도 잘 살펴봐야 한다. 이런 요인들을 중점적으로 조사한 후에는, 자신이 가면 안 되는 곳을 먼저 빼야 하는데, 자신이 가면 안 되는 곳이란, 자신이 준비한 시험, 활동 등을 받아주지 않는 학교, 자신이 장학금을 받을 수 없는 곳(재정), 군대 문제에서 충돌이 일어나는 곳, 종교적으로 맞지 않는 곳, 위치적으로 갈 수 없는 곳들을 뜻한다. 이때 가능한 대학에는 EA를 많이 넣어보는 것을 추천한다. 그 이유는 나중에 장학금 협상을 할 때 다른 학교에서 받은 장학금을 가지고 협상해서 장학금을 더 받는 데에 사용될 수 있기 때문이다. 캘리포니아 대학 같은 경우에는 다른 대학교들과 시스템, 운영 장식이 다르다 보니, common app을 사용하지 않고, 더 면밀한 조사가 필요하다. UC 같은 경우도 여러 곳을 지원해도 1곳만 뽑아주는 등 시스템 자체가 많이 다르다.

The most accurate way to find information about schools is to research them yourself instead of asking people for their opinion. Schools are categorized into three major types: Liberal Arts, International Schools, and California Colleges. Many students in CSIS choose to go to Liberal Arts colleges. When choosing a Liberal Arts college, you need to refer to your priorities and research your major, the school’s major or program ranking from 1 to 100, and the overall school ranking from 1 to 100.
Your choice of major and its environment are important factors to consider. Even if the school is highly ranked, you need to consider what majors receive financial support and benefits. You can find this out by looking at the number of graduates in that major. For example, in Liberal Arts colleges, a major with more than 50 graduates is considered popular among students (with a good number of applicants), and a major with around 30 graduates are considered a well-built major. A major with graduates below 20 does not receive enough support from the school; it was likely created just for the sake of existing as a major.

You should also count the number of professors in the major or program. After researching the aforementioned factors, you need to delete the list of schools you should not apply to. This includes schools you cannot attend because of schools that do not accept the tests you took and your extra-curricular activities; schools that do not offer scholarships or financial aid; schools that have conflicts with serving in the military; schools that are contrary to your religion; and schools that are inconvenient in terms of transportation or geography. We recommend applying with EA for colleges that meet your needs. It is so that you can negotiate with the school regarding the scholarship if another school promises to offer you a scholarship. If you are looking for schools in California, you would need to do thorough research since it does not use the Common App like other schools; they use a different system. Even if you apply to several UC schools, you might get accepted to only one of them.
