위에 요인에 대해 충분한 조사를 마치고, 자신의 상황을 알게 된다면 각 학교의 입시 환경에 대해 알아야 한다. 학교의 종류, 장학금 종류, 입시 기간, 학교의 요구 등이 학교마다 천차만별이기 때문이다. 먼저 학교의 종류는 크게 국립, 사립, 캘리포니아로 나뉘고, 이 학교의 종류는 장학금 지원에 크게 영향을 미치기 때문에 꼭 알아야 한다. 장학금의 종류는 크게 두 가지로 나뉜다. 학교 지원과 국가 지원이다. 학교 지원 장학금은 사립 학교에서 많이 주고 제한이 많이 없다는 점이 장점이다. 국가 지원 장학금의 대상자는 시민권자, 그린카드 보유자 등이며, 국립 학교에서 국가 지원 장학금을 많이 준다. 그러니 자신이 시민권자이거나 그린카드 보유자 등이면 국립 학교에서 국가의 지원을 비교적 많이 받을 수 있다는 것을 알아야 한다.
입시 기간은 학교마다 다르기 때문에 대학교에 대한 기본적인 조사를 할 때 미리 기억하고 있어야 한다. EA(early action), ED(early decisions), REA(restricted early action), RD(regular decisions) 들이 있기에 잘 알고 있어야 한다. 또한 학교마다 요구하거나 사용할 수 있는 시험, 리포트 등이 다르다. ,사용할 수 있는 시험은 AP, SAT, TOEFL, Duolingo English Test가 있다. Duolingo English Test는 다른 시험들보다 돈이 적게 든다는 것이 장점이다. 이 시험들은 시험을 친 기관에서 대학교로 보내주는 형식을 보유하고 있는 시험들도 있고, 지원자들이 개인적으로 보낼 수 있는 시험들도 있다. 개인적으로 보내는 경우는 셀프 리포트에 기재하는 형식을 택한다. 기관에서 시험을 보내는 데에도 일정 금액이 청구되기 때문에 꼭 필요한 경우에만 기관을 이용하는 것이 좋은 선택이다. 개인적으로 보내는 경우에는 처음에는 셀프 리포트의 형식을 사용할 수 있지만 나중에 시험 점수와 자세한 세부 사항을 입증받아야 한다.

If you send the test result directly to the university, you may first use the self-report format but will need a verification of the test details later. The benefit of taking the Duolingo English test is that it is cheaper.
