자신의 인생에서 가장 중요한 결정 중 하나는 대학을 결정하는 것이다. 이 대학을 결정할 때는 생각보다 많은 요인을 고려해야 한다. 그중에 가장 먼저 고려해야 할 요인이 자신의 상황이다. 이 상황들은 자신의 희망 사항, 재정 상황 등이다. 이런 자신의 상황을 알고 난 후에야 자신에게 학교 랭킹이 가장 중요하고 과 랭킹이 그 다음인지 등의 우선 순위를 정할 수 있다. 이 우선순위 정리로 학교를 고르는 데에 시간도 단축될 뿐 아니라 후회 없는 선택을 할 수 있게 된다. 우선순위를 정한 후에는 자신이 가고 싶은 과를 정해야 한다. 위에서 정한 자신이 하고 싶은 것이 우선 순위인지, 자신이 잘하거나 돈을 많이 벌 수 있는 것이 우선순위인지는 이 과를 정하는 데에 큰 영향을 미친다. 과를 정한 후에는 각 학교에서 자신이 정한 과를 많이 지원하고 환경이 좋은지를 알 수 있다. 그런 뒤에는 학교의 위치를 정해야 한다. 캘리포니아에 위치한 학교 같은 경우에는 입시 시스템, 지원 시스템이 다른 곳이랑 확연하게 다른 경우가 파다하기 때문에 위치 또한 고려해야 할 중요한 요인이 된다. 이런 것들을 정한 후에는 자신이 원하는 일이 대학원을 필요한 일인지, 대학원에 갈 것인지를 정할 수 있다. 대학원까지 고려해야 하는 이유는 대학교마다 특정 과에 제공하는 대학원 프로그램이 있는 경우도 있고, 없는 경우도 있기 때문이고, 이 프로그램이 대학원을 더욱 수월하게 갈 수 있게 해줄 수도 있기 때문이다. 대학교에는 흔히 pre- 라고 불리는 대학원, 대학교 연계 프로그램이 과별로, 대학 별로 다르게 제공된다. 또한 이후에 많은 혜택을 위해서 여러 가지 선착순 프로그램도 있을 수 있으니, 활동 관련해서도 조사를 꼭 해보는 것이 좋다.
